Lassus’ 5-part French Chanson, Susanne un jour, first appeared in print in 1567 and quickly became very popular. It was one of the most widely used pieces found in division manuals with at least nine versions surviving today.

Rore - 'Ancor che col partire'

 

Rore’s 4-part madrigal, Ancor che col partire, first appeared in print in 1547. It was one of the most widely used pieces found in division manuals with at least nine versions surviving today.

Crecquillon’s four-part chanson, Un gay bergier, first appeared in print in 1543.

John Playford’s ‘The Division Violin’ contains two sets of variations on the song tune ‘John Come Kiss Me Now’ – one by virtuoso violinist Thomas Baltzar and this one, by Davis Mell, which is less violinistic and suitable for performance by recorder.
